Keystone Pipeline Bill Fails To Pass Senate

Recently, a bill that included legislation to pass the Keystone XL oil pipeline was brought to the Senate floor. The bill had the support of members from both the Democratic party and the Republican party. However, when the bill was brought to a vote, it failed 59-41. The bill needed 60 votes to pass. The Keystone XL pipeline was a proposed project that would run 1,179 miles from Canada down to the Gulf coast carrying Canadian oil to American refineries. While the project has received bipartisan support, those opposed to the pipeline believe that it could cause pollution and potentially cause climate change. Those who support the pipeline argue that the project will create thousands of jobs across the country and will help provide oil for future generations. Although the bill may have failed for now, Republicans vow that they will once again bring the bill to the floor once they have control of the Senate this year.
