The 2014 Midterms

The 2014 midterm elections are now over and this year has produced some surprising results. In this election Republicans were not only able to retain control of the House of Representatives but to gain control of the Senate. Coming into election night, the Republicans only needed to gain six seats in order to win the Senate. As it turned out, their win came down to several key races in the following states: Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, Iowa, Alaska, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Arkansas. In all of these states, Republicans were able to beat out Democratic incumbents giving Republicans a 53-45 majority in the Senate. Two other surprising races were those in Louisiana and Virginia. In Louisiana, since neither the Republican candidate (Bill Cassidy) nor the Democratic candidate (Mary Landrieu) were able to get over 50% of the vote a runoff will be held in December. In Virginia, Democrat Mark Warner was expected to have an easy win over Republican Ed Gillespie. However, as soon as polls closed, the race was still too close to call. Ed Gillespie led for most of the night but Warner ended up winning by roughly 16,000 votes. While many Republicans say this is a sign that Americans are fed up with Obama and his democratic policies, it should be interesting to see how the President and the new Republican Congress get along.
